The useful starting point
Use your existing expertise to evaluate relevant opportunities, prepare truthful evidence, and apply through Mercor. Read the specific role and contract before committing.
Remote work is a location arrangement, not a promise of a steady job. Learn where Mercor fits, how to prepare a focused application, and what to check before accepting a project.
Decide what kind of work you need
Write down your minimum practical requirements before searching: schedule, location, equipment, income predictability, and the work you are qualified to do. A short contract can be useful during a career transition, but it may not meet the same needs as salaried employment. Compare opportunities against your actual constraints instead of sorting only by the largest advertised rate.
What Mercor does
Mercor connects professionals with AI training and evaluation projects. Expertise is central: work can involve judging responses or developing examples. Opportunities are selective; read each listing. Mercor’s expert overview explains the model.
Freelancing with AI versus working on AI
For your own freelance service, a client buys a deliverable you agree to produce. You may use approved AI tools for preparation, drafting, or organization while remaining responsible for quality. For AI evaluation work, your own judgment may be the deliverable. Do not assume permission to automate it. Choose work you understand well enough to review and explain.
How to get started, step by step
- Open Ashley’s referral link. Review the opportunities and choose a genuinely relevant role.
- Create or update your profile. Prepare an accurate resume and clear examples of your expertise.
- Read the complete listing. Check location eligibility, qualifications, workload, equipment, and compensation terms.
- Complete the required steps. Follow the role’s assessment and interview instructions; requirements vary.
- Submit and check confirmation. Use your Mercor dashboard to see what is complete and what remains pending.
- Review an offer before accepting. Understand the contract, payment arrangements, and onboarding requirements.
Use Mercor’s application guide, profile guide, and assessment guide for the current screens and instructions.
Build an application from evidence
Select three achievements that match the listing. For each, write the situation, your personal contribution, the reasoning behind it, and the result you can verify. Explain career gaps plainly when relevant, and keep dates and qualifications consistent across your resume and profile. Maintain an application tracker so you know whether a submission is complete and what remains pending. Continue a broader job search if steady employment is your primary goal.
Prepare for an AI interview without outsourcing your answers
Practice explaining a real decision in your own words: the situation, your contribution, the tradeoff, and the outcome. Test your camera and microphone, choose a quiet space, and allow time to read the instructions. Mercor provides a practice interview. Treat screening as a demonstration of your own expertise.
Use AI for preparation on public or invented material—for example, organizing a list of skills you want to review. Keep confidential work out of external tools. During assessments and project work, follow the applicable rules. Mercor’s LLM policy limits AI assistance and prohibits outsourcing specified reasoning and evaluation tasks.
Make remote work fit your actual week
Before agreeing to work, ask what completion looks like, how quality is reviewed, which hours or deliverables are paid, and what happens when a project pauses. Check the current contract terms, payment guidance, and supported countries. A headline rate cannot tell you how much work you will receive.
For any freelance arrangement, plan for preparation, communication, revisions, and administration as well as delivery. Keep a record of agreed scope and approved work. Maintain other ways to find opportunities so that one application or one project does not carry your entire plan.
Your next 30 minutes
Compare one listing with your must-haves, then prepare three truthful examples before beginning its assessment.
Then take one concrete step: inspect a matching listing, improve one weak example, or prepare for a practice interview. If there is no suitable opportunity today, keep the useful evidence and return when a better match appears.
