How to prepare for an informational interview

A short, well-prepared conversation can teach you more about a role than a dozen job descriptions.

Ask for something small and clear

Request twenty minutes and say why you chose them: “I am exploring operations roles in healthcare and your path from clinic management stood out.” A specific reason makes a yes easier.

Prepare five questions

Ask what a typical week involves, which skills matter most, what surprised them about the work, how people usually enter the field, and who else they suggest you talk to. Listen more than you speak.

Do not ask for a job

The purpose is to learn. If the conversation goes well, they may offer to share openings or introductions. Let that be their idea.

Follow up within a day

Send a short thank-you that mentions one specific thing you learned. If you act on their advice later, let them know. That update is often how a conversation becomes a relationship.
